Public input sought on Hawaii State Wildlife Action Plan

Public input sought on Hawaii State Wildlife Action Plan

The Department of Land and Natural Resources is seeking public input on its updated Hawaii State Wildlife Action Plan, which lays out the strategy and plans of DLNR and its partners to address the conservation needs of Hawaii’s native wildlife over the next 10 years.

The State Wildlife Action Plan reviews the status of the state’s native terrestrial and aquatic species.

Completion of the plan will enable DLNR’s ongoing participation in the national State Wildlife Grant Program, which provides more than $450,000 per year for projects to conserve native wildlife. This plan identifies the projects, strategies and priorities for department funding under this grant program.

A copy of the 2015 draft plan can be downloaded at dlnr.hawaii.gov/wildlife/files/2015/07/SWAP-2015-Pub-draft.pdf.

Meetings to provide information about the plan and gather input will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the DLNR Division of Forestry Hawaii Branch office in Hilo and from 6 to 8 p.m Thursday at Waimea Community Center, 65-1260 Kawaihae Road.

Written comments may be submitted to Division of Forestry and Wildlife, 1151 Punchbowl St., Room 325, Honolulu, HI 96813. Email comments may be submitted to john.p.cetter@hawaii.gov. The deadline for public comments to be submitted is Aug. 31.

Visit dlnr.hawaii.gov/wildlife/hswap to find out how to get involved in the process and sign up to receive updates and announcements about how to participate in updating the plan.

Class teaches how to be an effective facilitator

The nonprofit Kuikahi Mediation Center will present “Become a Brilliant Bystander Facilitator” with Kimberly Dark on Aug. 22. The workshop takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the conference room at Engineering Partners Inc. at 455 E. Lanikaula St. in Hilo.

The workshop provides skills-building for anyone who attends meetings and wishes they would run smoothly, stay on track and end on time. Dark teaches people to use their talent, skills and creativity to lead from the side. Workshop participants will explore reasons people stay silent even though they know someone needs to speak up, practice strategies for stopping a discussion-bully, learn to ask intelligent questions to increase participation and practice specific skills to redirect a group.

Cost is $50. Group discounts are available. To register, contact Kuikahi Mediation Center’s Program Coordinator Gail Takaki at 935-7844, ext. 9, or gail@hawaiimediation.org.
