92nd Big Island Amateur Golf Championship

The 92nd Big Island Amateur Golf Championship will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Francis H. I’i Brown North Course.

The event has been countinously held since 1924. Last year’s champion Shon Katahira will be back to defend his crown. Other past champions in the field includes: Jeff Strang (2011, 2002), Dalen Yamauchi (2010), Greg Molfino (2009), Doug Oki (2003, 2001).

Big Island Running Company offers Honolulu Marathon training

Big Island Running Company is again offering a free training program for runners training for the Honolulu Marathon.

The program will start with an introductory meeting at 5 p.m. on Aug. 20 at the Alii Drive location in the Coconut Grove Marketplace, with a short run following. Runs will be scheduled to coincide with group runs at 5 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday and a long run at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Each participant will also have additional running days on their own. The Honolulu Marathon will take place on Dec. 13 at 5 a.m. For more information, please contact Melissa@bigislandrunningcompany.com or call 327-9333.

Kupuna softball batting practice

Elderly Recreation Services will be hosting softball batting practice and pickup games for anyone 55 and older on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Old Airport from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. starting Sept. 8th. Meet at the mauka field under the lights, on the north end of the park. Balls will be provided, but bring your own bat and glove.

Table tennis tournament in Kona

The Kona Inaugural 2 Star USATT Sanctioned Table Tennis Tournament will be held Aug. 16,with 40-plus players already entered.

First Tee program fundraiser

A fundraiser will be held for the First Tee Program at Big Island Country Club on Sept. 6. Shotgun start at 8 a.m. with registration at 7 a.m. Entry Fee per person is $100, plus $20 mulligan and $20 closest to the pin for all four Par 3’s. Format is a two-person scramble with a maximum team handicap of 50.

Funds raised will be used to purchase clubs for the kids to use during the program, skag equipment for fun golfing instruction. Please join us for a fun day golf while helping the kids in our community.

Kona Stingrays Basketball Club Golf Tournament

The inaugural Kona Stingrays Basketball Club Golf Tournament will be held Aug. 23 at Big Island Country Club.

Tournament check-in will be at 7:15 a.m. followed by a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The format is two person best ball modified.

Cost to enter the tournament is $120, which includes green fees, two mulligans, prizes and luncheon. Entry is limited to the first 120 players.

Mauna Loa Training Time Trial

The Hawaii Cycling Club’s 17-mile Mauna Loa Training Time Trial and Saturday Ride are scheduled for Aug. 15 at 8 a.m. on the Mauna Loa Observatory Road.

Participants can choose between the training time trial and the non-timed Saturday Club ride, which will start immediately after the timed event.

Casual bicyclists take your time and enjoy Mauna Loa Observatory Road’s spectacular views and very light traffic.

HCC’s famous Talk Story food and beverage station will be at the finish line. Registration will be from 7:30 -7:45 a.m. at Kipuka Pu’u Huluhulu (Native Tree Sanctuary) parking lot off of Saddle Rd.

Either an annual membership or a one day membership is required to participate. The annual membership fee is $20. The one day fee is $10.

Waimea bubble soccer registration open

Waimea Athletics is now accepting registration for 3 vs. 3 Bubble Ball Soccer. The max roster is five. Divisions offered are for ages 11-12 and 13-14.

A mandatory clinic will be held Sept. 2 from 4-5 p.m. at Waimea Park.

Biddy basketball in Waimea extended

Team registration deadline for Waimea Biddy Basketball has been extended to Aug. 21.

A clinic will be held Monday-Wednesday at Thelma Parker Gym. Ages 5-6 will play at 3:30 p.m., and ages 7-8 at 4:30 p.m.

West Hawaii Special Olympics Power lifting Coach Denise Lindsey talks about her role at the Special Olympics World Games held in L.A. where Isaiah Wong from her Kona Powerlifting team received a silver medal in Squat, Gold medal in deadlift and Gold in combination of three lifts.

Denise shares about the mission of Special Olympics particularly on the Big Island and how anyone can be involved as a volunteer or coach. There is no fee for participation for the Special Olympic athletes.
