Holualoa plans ‘First Friday’ event
Jessi Diederich will light up Holualoa Village with her LED hula hoop performance next to the Holualoa Gallery Friday evening.
The monthly First Friday event in the historic upcountry town runs from 5:30 until 8:30 p.m. Dr. Tim and the Medicine Show will also be performing at the Ipu Arts Plus Gallery.

APAC Bachelor Auction is Saturday
Aloha Performing Arts Company will hold its second annual Bachelor Auction Saturday at Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu.
More than 10 eligible bachelors have agreed to participate and winning bidders can expect to enjoy meals from a number of local restaurants, in addition to activities such as water sports, golf and a massage.
VIP tickets are available pre-sale for $20. The doors for VIP ticket holders open at 6:30 p.m. with light pupus and a chance to mingle with the eligible bachelors before the bidding begins. The doors for regular ticket holders open at 7:15 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $10.
All proceeds benefit Aloha Performing Arts Company’s mission to bring live theatre and arts to West Hawaii.

Soward paintings to be displayed
Stellae Errantes, a series of elephant paintings by Sarah Soward, will be on display at the EHCC/Hawaii Museum of Contemporary Art in Hilo starting Friday.
An opening reception is slated from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the EHCC/Hawaii Museum of Contemporary Art. Soward’s work will remain on display through Aug. 25. The exhibition is free to the public.
The exhibition combines depictions of elephants with ideas of the astronomy and mythology of our solar system. During the exhibition, Soward will be in the gallery working on depicting the supercluster galaxy system of Laniakea by way of Hawaii’s endemic bird species. Dwarf planets and moon phases are also on her to do list.
The EHCC/Hawaii Museum of Contemporary Art is located at 141 Kalakaua Street in Hilo.
’Exit Through the Gift Shop’ to be shown at VAC
Come see the film, “Exit Through the Gift Shop” by Banksy, the world’s most famous street artist, and join a lively discussion about the street art phenomenon. The film will be shown at the Volcano Art Center Niaulani Campus on Thursday at 7 p.m.
In this film by the artist, ironic social critic and famously anonymous British street icon, Bansky, we are introduced to the underground world of street art and to some of the young people whose talent and methods have been noteworthy enough to earn the admiration of their peers and to catch the attention of the art world. The film was a 2010 Academy Award nominee for Best Documentary Feature. A free-for-all discussion to follow, plus a look at some examples of Bansky’s art.
This screening is part of a once-a-month Thursday evening series at the Volcano Art Center, focusing on art, Hawaiian culture and our environment. The series is intended to inspire, enhance our art and life experience and foster community connections.
The Volcano Art Center Niualani Campus is located at 19-4074 Old Volcano Road in Volcano Village. This presentation is free, however, donations are welcome.
Kamaaina day passes available for HawaiiCon
HawaiiCon has released day passes for local fans, including $20 passes for a preview half-day planned Sept. 10. The convention runs through Sept. 13 at Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel.
Sept. 13 programming begins at 7 a.m. with a celebrity zipline tour with Kapoho Kine Adventures. Gaming and vendor areas open at noon. Most of the panels start at 3 p.m. and run until 10 p.m.
Actress Patricia Tallman, who played in Babylon 5, Night of the Living Dead and Jurassic Park has joined the staff at HawaiiCon. As an avid scuba diver and hiker, she will be in charge of all the tour activities.
Sept. 10 begins three full days of panels and events that run from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. each day. With more than 30 celebrities, writers, artists and scientists, there will be a huge diversity of panels in which to choose.

APAC resumes theater classes
Aloha Performing Arts Company will resume its roster of theater education opportunities for all ages in late August.
Artistic Director Jerry Tracy’s “Tuesday Troupers” class for 8- to 12-year-old budding performers begins Aug. 25, and meets for six Tuesdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. through Sept. 29. A free public performance will be held at 5 p.m. Sept. 29. Students will work on developing and maintaining the tools and skills required for performing on the stage. Tracy will be assisted by Aloha Teen Theatre member Riley Newton. Tuition for “Tuesday Troupers” is $60 per student.
From 4 to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays from Aug. 24 to Sept. 28, Megan Hodge will continue APAC’s “Keiki Theatre” class for 3 to 7 year olds. This is a fun and meaningful introduction to theater basics that will help build characters and self confidence. There will be six meetings, with a sharing show on the final day. Tuition is $40 per student.
Felicity Johnson kicks off the next six-week session of her “Intergenerational Acting” class for all ages on Aug. 27. The classes will be held Thursdays from 2 to 4 p.m. through Oct. 1. No experience is required and newcomers are welcome. A free public show will be offered on the final class day. Tuition is $60 per student.
All classes will be held at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu. In addition, new adviser Engela Edwards will meet with Aloha Teen Theatre every Friday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the APAC Loft, across the street from Aloha Theatre. Participation is free and open to ages 13 to 18. Educational as well as performance and travel opportunities are in the ATT plans. No previous theater experience is necessary to participate, and nonperforming opportunities are available.
