WAILUKU, Maui — State officials have fined James Hattaway of Maui Family Chiropractic $7,000 for 69 counts of fraud.

WAILUKU, Maui — State officials have fined James Hattaway of Maui Family Chiropractic $7,000 for 69 counts of fraud.

The Maui News reports that a county news release says Hattaway was treating a county Department of Parks and Recreation worker who injured his back on the job and continued to treat the man after a non-work-related car crash re-injured his back.

The state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations found that Hattaway committed fraud when he didn’t tell the county about the non-work-related incident. The department says the county ended up paying the chiropractor $1,984.54 in fraudulent billing claims.

The ruling also says Hattaway double-billed GEICO Insurance for the second injury.

Hattaway did not respond to the Maui News’ call for comment Friday.
