Hale building workshop planned
The fourth Traditional Hale Building Workshop, conducted by certified Traditional Hawaiian Hale builder Unko Waltah is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, at Panaewa Zoo Rainforest &Gardens, 800 Stainback Highway, Hilo.
The public is invited to join Hawaii Forest Institute for this workshop to construct the Hale Mala. The workshop helps perpetuate the Hawaiian culture and teach the skills of building a structure out of materials from the aina. Unko Waltah brings a wealth of knowledge and aloha.
Those attending should wear closed toed shoes and sunscreen and bring rain gear.

Suicide prevention task force to meet
West Hawaii Suicide Prevention Task Force meets from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday in the conference room at the West Hawaii Community Health Center on thecorner of Hualalai Road and Kuakini Highway. All are welcome to attend who have an interest in preventing suicide in the community and willingness to join this collective effort to keep families and friends safe from the threat of suicide.

APAC plans Bachelor Auction
Aloha Performing Arts Company is in final preparations for a summer fundraiser, its second Bachelor Auction. More than 10 eligible bachelors have agreed to participate and winning bidders can expect to enjoy meals from a number of restaurants in addition to activities such as water sports, golf and massage.
The event takes place Saturday at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu. VIP tickets are available for pre-sale at $20 per ticket. The doors for VIP ticket holders open at 6:30 and they include light pupu and a chance to mingle with the eligible bachelors before the bidding begins. The doors for regular ticket holders open at 7:15 p.m. and the price at the door is $10.
All proceeds will benefit Aloha Performing Arts Company’s mission to create live theater performances and arts education opportunities West Hawaii. Tickets can be purchased by phone at 322-9924 or from APAC’s website at apachawaii.org.
Diabetics invited to market, store tour
Vivienne Aronowitz, registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator, will conduct a tour of the Homestead Market in Waimea at its new location, followed by a walk through the aisles of Foodland on Saturday. Participants will learn about different products needed and quick and easy ideas to prepare meals and snacks that will boost health and vitality. The focus is for people with diabetes, but anyone can benefit. Cost $45, which may be covered by insurance.
Participants should meet outside the Waimea post office at 10 a.m. Saturday. The tour will last until 11:30. Pre-registration is required. Call 936-9001 or email aronowitz@gmail.com.
Mauna Kea Quilter meeting Saturday
Mauna Kea Quilters, started in 1997, is a group of patchwork quilters who enjoy sharing their love of quilting with others. The group meets from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday in the meeting room of the Thelma Parker Memorial Library for a a business meeting, show and tell and sharing of new ideas and techniques.
Each year, the group donates many quilts to help raise money for worthwhile organizations such as Malaai (The Culinary Garden of Waimea Middle School) and Relay for Life. The group also provides quilts to the police and fire departments and North Hawaii Community Hospital for those in need. At Christmas, they make quilted stockings and quilts for needy children.

Merriman’s Culinary Scholarship recipients announced
Merriman’s Restaurant Waimea has announced the recipients of the annual Merriman’s Culinary Scholarship.
This year, culinary student Hana Jung-Okuda, attending Hawaii Community College at Hilo Campus and James Thomas, attending Kauai Community College have each been awarded $1,050.
“Each of this year’s applicants showed ambition and passion for the field with promising futures in the culinary program,” said Brandi Romain, director of operations. “We would like to give a big mahalo to our selection committee team in choosing these deserving individuals.”
The members are Diane Orenstein-Taxes, Etc., financial affiliate; Gene Erger, community public relations; and Sandy Barr Rivera, culinary educator with Hawaii Community College.
The Merriman’s Culinary Scholarship program has provided scholarships since 2000 for students entering or continuing in the field of culinary arts at either Hawaii Community Colleges or the University of Hawaii Center at West Hawaii. The scholarships are awarded annually based on applicant’s outstanding qualities, passion for the field and financial need. To date, Merriman’s Culinary Scholarship has donated a total of $47,250 and helped more than 40 culinary students advace their education.
