Hilo orchid show kicks off with preview party

The benefit Preview Party that kicks off the Hilo Orchid Society’s 63rd anniversary Orchid Show and Sale is being held in memory of Sandy Song. The party is dedicated to Song as a tribute to her years of devoted board service to Kuikahi Mediation Center, and her avid orchid growing and judging.

Held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium, the gala features drinks, food, music and orchid pre-sales. The event is zero waste, with eco-friendly eating utensils, plus recycling/composting stations.

Each party-goer receives a souvenir glass, in order to enjoy a selection of fine wines, plus beer on tap from Kona Brewing Co. Non-alcoholic beverages and coffee from Hilo Coffee Mill are also served.

Pupu, dinner, and dessert buffets are compliments of Island Naturals and AJ &Sons Catering, featuring the food stylings of Dean Shigeoka and Audrey Wilson, food columnist for the Hawaii Tribune-Herald.

Kuikahi Mediation Center is the beneficary of the Preview Party.

The 63rd annual show and sale, “Orchids Avant-Garde,” will take place Satursday through Aug. 9 at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium. Admission is $5, free for children 12 and younger. For more information, visit hiloorchidsociety.org.

Free hoolaulea luau planned in Ocean View

The Evangelical Church in Ocean View invites the community to its third Hoolaulea Luau on Saturday. Registration opens at 9 a.m. and festivities are planned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Free Hawaiian food will be served while supplies last, including lomi lomi salmon, chicken long rice and kalua pig. There will be a bounce house, tie dying for those who bring a white or light color item to dye, face painting and games with prizes for keiki.

Ka‘u churches will present entertainment and a variety of services will be present. The church is at 92-8977 Leilani Circle and may be contacted at 939-9089. Signs with directions will be posted in Ocean View on event day.

Kiwanis West Hawaii meets Wednesday

Kiwanis West Hawaii will meet at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Quinn’s Almost By the Sea on Palani Road in Kailua-Kona. All visiting Kiwanis and prospective members are invited. This is a new satellite organization of Kiwanis East Hawaii.

Kiwanis looks to serve the community by conducting service projects that respond to identified needs, especially related to children.

Hui Laulima to hear two speakers

West Hawaii Hui Laulima meets from 10:30 a.m. to noon Friday at the West Hawaii Community Health Center Community meeting room (ground floor).

The hui welcomes Lisa Lea, outreach specialist for HOPE Services Supplemental Nutrition Program, and Tanya Hardin, prevention education manager for the Hawaii Meth Project.
