Gerundio Madrid

Gerundio “John” Eublera Madrid, 98, of Hilo died July 9, 2015, at home. Born Feb., 25, 1917, in Pangasinan, Philippines, he was a retired bell man for the Sheraton Waikiki and Sheraton Princess Kaiulani, a former bell captain for the Alexander Young Hotel, a former employee for Kauai Sugar Plantation and member of the Hospitality and Healthcare Union Local 5.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. Aug. 1 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 10 a.m. service. Burial follows at Alae Cemetery, Section K. A celebration of life potluck luncheon follows at Kolekole Beach Park. Family rquests aloha or casual attire be worn.

He is survived by wife, Carolina Madrid of Hilo; sons, George (Elaine) Madrid and Gary Madrid, both of Oahu, Gilbert Madrid of Hilo; daughters, Carolina (David) Griep of Hakalau, Cecilia Madrid of Oahu; 20 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Rose Giltner

Rose K. Giltner, 76, formerly of Kohala died June 28, 2015, at home in Honokaa. Born in Honolulu, she was a pantry worker, landscaper, painter, stock clerk, ranch hand and nursery worker.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. Aug. 1 at the Kahua Ranch chapel on the Kohala Mountain Road for a celebration of life.

She is survived by husband, Robert Giltner Sr., formerly of Kohala; son, Henry (Ann) Giltner of Waikoloa; daughters, Roberta (Alvin) Perez of Kohala, Victoria Cox and Jamie (Klem Kaniho) Giltner, both of Waimea, Tammy (Ted) White of Honokaa; 20 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Benjamin Gomes

Benjamin “Benny” “Ben” Gomes, 92, of Naalehu died July 20, 2015, at a private family care home. Born in Holualoa,he was a retired crane operator for Ka‘u Sugar Co. in Naalehu.

Friends may call at 8 a.m. Aug. 1 at Naalehu Sacred Heart Catholic Church for a 9:30 a.m. Mass. Burial is at Naalehu Community Cemetery. Family requests casual attire. Flowers welcome.

He is survived by daughters, Bronwyn Denis of Holualoa, Sharon (Calvin) Ponce of Pahala, Velda (S) Wright of Hilo, Gwendolyn (Richard) Ramirez of Kailua-Kona; sons, Claude (Janet) Gomes and Wayne (Masae) Gomes, both of Hilo; sister, Leslie Duarte of Holualoa; 10 grandchildren;14 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Kimo Jarrett

Kimo King Jarrett, 51, of Waikoloa died June 1, 2015, at North Hawaii Community Hospital, Born Oct. 29, 1963, in Westminster, Calif., he was a mechanic and a Marine Corps veteran.

A graveside service and inurnment will be held 10:30 a.m. Aug. 1 at Diamond Head Memorial Park in Honolulu. Family requests casual attire to be worn and no flowers.

He is survived by wife, Heather Jarrett of Waikoloa; sons, Bryce Jarrett of Lake Elsinore, Calif., Jason Jarrett of Waikoloa; mother, Lahela Jarrett of Waikoloa; brothers, Kevin Jarrett of Reno, Nev., Keola (Katie) Jarrett of Waimanalo, Oahu; hanai parents, Richard and Catherine Chamberlin of Buffalo, N.Y.; numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Louis Martines

Louis “Louie” Martines, 96, of Hilo died July 15, 2015, at Hilo Medical Center. Born April 6, 1919, in Honomu, he was a retired truck driver for the County of Hawaii and member of New Hope Christian Fellowship in Hilo.

Friends may call at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 1 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 2:30 p.m. service. Burial follows at Alae Cemetery, Section E. Family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by sons, Reginald Martines of Hilo, Michael (Pearl) Martines of Pahoa; daughter, Pearl (Derek) Nakamura of Kurtistown; brother, Manual Martines of San Francisco; sisters, Isabel Miranda of Oahu, Frances Farias of Hilo, Dolores Vermeulan of California, Rosa Garcia of Ewa Beach, Oahu; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Joseph Mattos

Joseph Mattos, 85, of Hawi died July 13, 2015, at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born June 17, 1930, in Kohala, he was a project coordinator for the Historical State Park in Kohala, Hawaii National Guard retiree, Castle and Cooke supervisor at the Kohala Sugar Plantation, Kohala High School basketball coach and member of the Kohala Senior Citizens Club.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. Aug. 1 at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church in Kapaau for an 11 a.m. service. Family requests aloha attire be worn.

He is survived by sons, Wendell (Jeannie) Mattos of Kapaau, Wesley (Dana) Mattos of Kealakekua; brothers, Herbert (Connie) Mattos and Robert Mattos, both of California; sisters, Dorothy Mattos of Honolulu, Mildred Hart of Wahiawa, Oahu, Joann Cruse of Texas; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Renee Roberts

Renee Marie Roberts died July 9, 2015, in Kailua-­Kona. Born Jan. 14, 1961, in Phoenix, she pursued many endeavors in her life.

Friends may call from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Aug. 1 at Honokohau Harbor Big Game Fishing Club for a celebration of her life. In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations in her memory may be made to the International Marine Mammal Project at immp.eii.org.
