Authorities say two crew members of Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America sustained serious injuries while working aboard the cruise ship, which is docked in the Port of Hilo.
Battalion Chief Warren Sumida of the Hawaii County Fire Department said the department received the alarm at 2:08 p.m. He said the two men were being lowered over the side, either in a boat or life raft, when “something gave way.” He said the crew members fell into the water.
Sumida said the crew members were taken by ambulance to Hilo Medical Center, but couldn’t provide information on their injuries or conditions.
Operations in Hilo Harbor were not affected by the incident, according to Tim Sakahara, spokesman for the Hawaii Department of Transportation.
The Pride of America docked in Hilo around 8 a.m. Tuesday, he added.
NCL America’s corporate offices are in Miami, and because of the six-hour time difference, the Tribune-Herald was unable to reach a spokeswoman for additional information by deadline.
