Hawaii Island police arrested 27 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant between July 20 and Sunday. Eleven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were younger than 21.
Kona District officers arrested 14 individuals while South Kohala officers arrested three drivers. Puna and South Hilo District officers each arrested five motorists.
So far this year, there have been 576 DUI arrests compared with 680 during the same period last year, a decrease of 15.3 percent.
There have been 858 major accidents so far this year compared with 901 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.8 percent.
So far this year, there have been 13 traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with eight during the same period last year, an increase of 62.5 percent. A fatality on July 18 was reclassified to a medical condition.
To date, eight fatalities were related to drugs, or a combination of drugs and alcohol.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
