School resumes at Ka’u High and Pahala Elementary

Classes resume at Ka‘u High School and Pahala Elementary School for pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, seventh and ninth grade on Friday. All other students will return to school Aug. 3.

Story time scheduled Wednesday

Kona Stories bookstore, with assistance from the American Association of University Women, will host a story time for children ages 3 to 7 at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. The theme this month is bubbles and bath time. Story time includes crafts and snacks for a $5 participation fee.

Keiki story times are held in the Keauhou Shopping Center courtyard. Check in 10 minutes early at Kona Stories book store. Space is limited. For more information, or to reserve a spot, call 324-0350.

Business seminar to focus on exports

The Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce presents West Hawaii Export Seminar, a business-related presentation on how to expand commerce internationally.

The event is planned from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority in the Keena Hana Building. Attendees will learn an overview of the export process, find worldwide buyers and partners, and find out which markets are hot.

This two-hour seminar is presented by John Holman, director of the Pacific for the U.S. Commercial Service, a division of the U.S. Department of Commerce. One-on-one consultations will also be provided to attendees after the presentation.

Suicide intervention class planned

A two-day training on suicide intervention will be presented from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the West Hawaii Civic Center. Attendance is mandatory on both days.

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training is offered free of charge to those interested in acquiring information and skills to respond to a person at risk of suicide. Participants must be at least 16 years old.

Hawaiian flag day celebrated at Puukohola Heiau

Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site will hold its annual event celebrating Ka Hae Hawaii, the Hawaiian flag from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday. The free event is held at the park’s visitor center.

Kalaniakea Wilson will present educational programs about the Hawaiian flag, motto, song and the first luau. At 11 a.m. there will be a flag ceremony with the blowing of conch shells and pu ohe, or bamboo trumpet, at the visitor center’s flag poles. Visitors will be able to make their own pu ohe. Following the ceremony, the Royal Order of Kamehameha Kohala Chapter will provide music.

There are three places where the Hawaiian flag has been dedicated with a Hawaiian ceremony to fly alone as a living symbol of the Hawaiian people: Iolani Palace, Mauna Ala and Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site.
