WAILUKU — An 87-year-old Maui woman died over the weekend after she was hit by a car driven by her 11-year-old grandson.
According to police, the boy drove a Mitsubishi Galant in reverse out of a parking stall Saturday afternoon and the driver’s side door hit the woman and knocked her to the ground, reported the Honolulu Star-Advertiser (https://bit.ly/1Oi0V6e ).
The accident happened after a social event at the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center in Kahului.
The car continued backing up until it hit a Honda stopped behind it.
The Wailuku boy and the Honda driver were not hurt, according to police. The woman was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.
Mark Mizuno said he heard someone calling for help while he was cleaning up inside the veterans’ center.
He went outside and saw a woman on the ground surrounded by people. Mizuno, an MRI technician, said he ran to help and took the woman’s pulse.
She had cuts on the back of her head and on her elbow, he said, and was not responsive. Her pulse and breathing were normal and she opened her eyes, according to Mizuno.
“It looked like she got pushed back somehow and just landed on her back and probably banged her head,” he said.
Mizuno saw a boy standing nearby, crying and saying it was his fault. He said he thought the boy was in high school and didn’t realize that he was only 11.
The woman’s son — the father of the 11-year-old boy — was anxiously holding her and asking for help, said Mizuno.
