Hawaii Island police arrested 16 motorists for allegedly driving under the influence of an intoxicant between July 13 and Sunday. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were younger than the age of 21.
Hawaii Island police arrested 16 motorists for allegedly driving under the influence of an intoxicant between July 13 and Sunday. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were younger than the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 549 DUI arrests compared with 663 during the same period last year, a decrease of 17.2 percent, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
Kona officers arrested six drivers while South Hilo officers arrested five. South Kohala officers arrested three drivers while Puna officers arrested two.
There have been 819 major accidents so far this year compared with 871 during the same period last year.
So far this year, there have been 14 traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with eight during the same period last year, an increase of 75 percent.
To date, eight fatalities were related to drugs, or a combination of drugs and alcohol.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
