Lance A. Mizumoto has been appointed chairman of the Hawaii state Board of Education.

Lance A. Mizumoto has been appointed chairman of the Hawaii state Board of Education.

The three-year appointment is effective immediately, Gov. David Ige said Monday.

Mizumoto has 25 years of experience with financial institutions in Hawaii, the Board of Education said. Currently he is the president and chief banking officer of Central Pacific Bank where he oversees strategic direction and management. Previously, he served in various capacities at Central Pacific Bank, First Hawaiian Bank, Bank of Hawaii and International Savings and Loan. He also serves on the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii Board and is a member of Chaminade University’s Board of Regents.

“Lance is committed to creating a better future for Hawaii’s students. He believes that focusing on students and empowering principals, teachers and staff is the best path to success in our public education system. He is committed to school-based decision making. Lance will be a collaborative leader, one not afraid to tackle the tough issues that get in the way of student achievement,” said Ige.

The BOE recently announced Mizumoto as one of four new members on the board. Also appointed, and confirmed by the state Senate, were Maggie Cox, Hubert Minn, and student member Brennan Lee.
