Hawaii Island police arrested 20 motorists for allegedly driving under the influence of an intoxicant between July 6 and Sunday. Nine of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than age of 21.
Hawaii Island police arrested 20 motorists for allegedly driving under the influence of an intoxicant between July 6 and Sunday. Nine of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 533 DUI arrests compared with 647 during the same period last year, a decrease of 17.6 percent, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
Kona officers arrested nine drivers while South Hilo officers arrested five. Puna and South Kohala officers arrested three drivers in each district.
There have been 790 major accidents so far this year compared with 837 during the same period last year.
So far this year, there have been 13 traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with eight during the same period last year, an increase of 62.5 percent.
To date, eight fatalities were related to drugs, or a combination of drugs and alcohol.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
