Kudos to Ige for new smoking ban

Kudos to Ige for new smoking ban

In regard to the article by Chelsea Jensen titled “Smoking at state parks soon to be illegal,” I agree with many points given by Gov. David Ige and Rep. Cindy Evans.

As Ms. Jensen mentioned, this bill goes hand-in-hand with the new law that prohibits people younger than 21 to smoke, buy or be in possession of tobacco projects. This will hopefully lessen the long-term effects of tobacco products use.

The new law will now allow people of all ages who attend state parks to enjoy the area without being exposed to second-hand smoke, as it is detrimental to health. Cigarette butts will no longer litter the grounds, adding to the beauty and health of the park environment.

However, I am curious of the repercussions or penalties for smoking in a state park. Is there any information regarding if or how parks will be monitored for smokers? State government could employ people to monitor parks, raising the employment rate on the Big Island. What do you think of this possible job and if it would be effective in enforcing the law?

And justice for all — finally

The recent Supreme Court ruling that the U.S. Constitution provides same-sex couples the right to marry is an historic victory not only for gay and lesbian Americans but for all Americans who cherish equality, liberty and justice for all.

Reassuringly, this ruling bears witness that “equal justice under law” — words that are etched into stone on the front of the Supreme Court — has at long last triumphed over discrimination and inequity.

With the landmark ruling, same-sex marriage now becomes legal in all 50 states. My guess is we’ll get used to it in no time.

What about Kahaluu beach?

I didn’t see anything in the papers about any funds being budgeted toward the repairs to Kahaluu Beach Park where most of our tourists head off to enjoy their time in Kona. This is where Billy Kenoi should be putting some of his efforts.

Tourism is our main industry and Kahaluu is the best snorkeling sight in Kona. Since it’s a fish management area, those aquarium fish collectors cannot come and take fish from our shores for their trade. I tell this to our visitors when they exclaim how wonderful it is to snorkel there and how awesome the fish are.

Let’s put the funds to repair what needs fixing the most and where it will draw more tourists.
