HONOLULU (AP) — Oahu shoppers are starting to bring their own bags into grocery stores as the county’s ban on plastic bags takes effect.

The Honolulu Star Advertiser reports (https://bit.ly/1R58FOP) Oahu is joining the rest of the state in implementing a ban three years after it was signed by then-mayor Peter Carlisle.

City Environmental Services Director Lori Kahikina enforces the ban and says it’s going to take shoppers some time to get used to bringing their own bags into the store.

Retailers are allowed to offer customers bags that are made of compostable plastic or paper that’s contains at least 40 percent post-consumer recycled content.
