A man and a woman are in police custody after being found in a stolen pickup truck Wednesday in Ka’u.
At 9:50 a.m. Wednesday, Kaʻu patrol officers responded to a report of a suspicious truck in a driveway in the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates subdivision, according to the Hawaii Police Department. Upon arrival, the officers determined the Toyota Tacoma pickup truck had been reported stolen from a parking lot in Kailua-Kona sometime between May 30 and 31.
As they were arresting the man who had been behind the wheel, the female passenger attempted to drive away in the truck and struck an officer’s patrol vehicle, causing minor damage, police said.
The pair, 27-year-old Isaac Abrojena and 23-year-old Cheyanne Collins, both of Ocean View, were arrested and taken to the Kona police cellblock while detectives from the Area II Criminal Investigations Section continued the investigation.
At 9 a.m. Friday, detectives charged Abrojena with unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle. His bail was set at $10,000. Collins was charged with unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle and inattention to driving. Her bail was set at $11,000.
They remained at the cellblock pending their initial court appearances scheduled for Monday.
The truck was recovered and returned to its owner, police said.
