Randy Llanes, a veteran Kailua-Kona charter boat captain who passed May 29 after a swordfish impaled him in his chest, was remembered by his loved ones and fellow captains during a scattering of his ashes on Friday off the Kona coast.
While Llanes was known for his prowess on the water, he also held the distinction of captain away from the ocean, as the leader of the Strongarms Bowling Team.
KBXtreme, Llanes’ home bowling alley, is providing another way to remember the fallen captain and to give back with the Captain Randy Llanes Tournament on June 28.
“Randy Llanes has been a regular bowler at KBXtreme for over 25 years. He was an amazing fisherman and touched the lives of countless people with his stories, friendly personality and genuine aloha spirit,” KBXtreme Marketing Director Summer Carrick said in a release. “He ended his journey doing what he loved, and we know his spirit will live on in all the many lives he touched.”
The entry fee for five-man team tournament is $39 per person, or $195 per team, and will include prizes and a round of Coronas for each team — applicable to those 21-plus. KBXtreme said they hope for the event to become an annual occurrence.
All proceeds from the tournament will be donated to the “LTW…Llanes That’s Why!” memorial fund on gofundme.com. As of Friday afternoon, the online fundraiser had already raised $31,830 for his family.
“Randy was the true definition of aloha, and we want to do this the Llanes way,” Carrick said.
