The suspected dog poisonings were in the Maui Uplands neighborhood, KHON-TV reported .
One family noticed one of their dogs acting funny last weekend, so they took it to the veterinarian, Humane Society officials said. The dog later died. Then the family’s other dog began showing the same symptoms and also died.
The vet believes they suffered from antifreeze poisoning.
“Just a few days ago, we did receive reports that some people had found dog treats in their yard and fortunately their dogs had not had the opportunity to eat them yet,” said Jerleen Bryant, Maui Humane Society CEO. “Just today, we did receive a report that another person has their dog at the vet with the same symptoms.”
Symptoms of antifreeze poisoning in dogs include excessive thirst, urination, vomiting and lethargy. They can even act like they’re intoxicated, the Humane Society said.
“If you put your dogs out in the yard, please go and inspect your yard first. Please don’t leave your dogs out in the yard unsupervised,” Bryant said. “I know that may not seem realistic, but right now we just have to be on high alert and be very cautious when it comes to our pets.”
The Humane Society asked everyone to keep an eye on their dogs and for anyone who may seem suspicious.
