Weekly gas report: Prices in Kailua-Kona up a nickel from last week

Drivers filling fuel tanks in the area spent an average of $3.52 per gallon of regular unleaded gasoline between Monday (June 15) and Friday (June 19), an analysis of a week’s worth of GasBuddy.com data from the Kailua-Kona, Waimea, Kealakekua and Waikoloa areas shows. That’s up a nickel from last week and a quarter from mid-February when drivers in Kailua-Kona were paying an average of $3.27 for the same gallon of gas.

At the Kailua-Kona Costco, where membership is required, a gallon of regular unleaded fuel held steady at $3.19 per gallon, according to the data. That price has gone unchanged since late May.

In Kealakekua, motorists doled out five cents more this week at $3.52 per gallon, according to the data. The same five-cent increase was recorded in Waimea, where drivers paid an average of $3.71 per gallon.

Fueling a vehicle in the Waikoloa Village area cost $3.72 per gallon — up from $3.66 last week — while drivers filling tanks in the resort area of Waikoloa paid six cents more at $3.87 per gallon.

Based on those locations, fueling up on the leeward side of the Big Island — excluding the Waikoloa resort area where prices are normally higher — cost drivers $3.72 per gallon between Monday and Friday. Including the Waikoloa resort area, motorists this week spent on average $3.86, which is five cents higher than last week.

Hilo drivers spent $3.28 per gallon, up six cents from last week, according to GasBuddy.com data. AAA’s Daily Fuel Gauge Report put the average price of gas at $3.29 per gallon this week, up three cents last week. AAA does not track gas prices for other areas on the Big Island.

The statewide average for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel was $3.35 this week, also up three cents from last week, according to the AAA data. One year ago, Hawaii residents were spending $4.35 per gallon.

In Honolulu, a gallon of gas during the week averaged $3.28 while the Wailuku area of Maui paid $3.43, according to AAA. Both prices are up from last week.

Nationwide, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was $2.80. California residents continue to dole out the most at $3.50 per gallon, which is down eight cents from last week. South Carolina drivers paid the least this week at $2.49 per gallon, up three cents from the week prior.
