Father’s Day concert fundraiser for Kona Coffee Living History Farm is Sunday
Daylight Mind Coffee Co. and the Kona Coffee Farmers Association will hold an evening concert on Father’s Day (Sunday) to benefit the Kona Historical Society’s Kona Coffee Living History Farm. The event runs from 5 to 9 p.m. at the restaurant, located at Waterfront Row off Alii Drive in Kailua Village.
The event will feature libations, dancing and the music of Grammy-nominated artist LT Smooth upstairs. Downstairs will be songs of old Hawaii during a special Father’s Day dinner with music by Konabob, Eke and special guests.
Suggested donation of $10, additional donations are encouraged.
‘Thoroughly Modern Millie Jr.’ continues at Aloha Theatre
“Thoroughly Modern Millie Jr.” continues this weekend at Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu.
The high-spirited musical romp, set in New York City in 1922, features young Millie Dillmount who has just moved to the big city in search of a new life for herself. It’s a New York full of intrigue and jazz, in a time when women were beginning to enter the workforce and the rules of love and social behavior were changing forever. The production is the mainstage offering of Aloha Performing Arts Company’s Aloha Teen Theatre.
“Thoroughly Modern Millie Jr.” will be presented at 7:30 p.m. tonight and Saturday and at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and young adults and $5 for children age 17 and younger.

Nolan Garrett offers Kona shows
Nolan Garrett, a 17-year-old guitarist, singer and songwriter, will perform two shows in Kona this week.
The musician will play Laverne’s Sports Bar on Thursday at 9 p.m. and Daylight Mind Coffee Co. on June 26 at 8 p.m. The June 26 performance may feature an opening act, and a cover charge may be assessed. Garrett last played in Kona at the age of 15.
Garrett, a native of Tacoma, Wash., plays a mix of rock, funk and blues. This versatile performer is already a veteran of sorts who first started playing at age 8, took to the professional stage a year later and is currently criss-crossing the Northwest as a weekend warrior.
“I love the old stuff and it definitely needs to be brought back, but I want to put a modern twist and flair on my songs,” Garrett says in his biography. “So far, my audience is really a combination of everybody. At my last show, I saw young kids in the crowd, a lot of people in their 20s, 30s, and 40s, plus some older people as well. I definitely want to be a successful touring musician and dream of playing at big festivals in front of several thousand people. I watch a lot of concerts on YouTube and always think it’s so cool when a band stops playing and you can hear everybody singing their song.”

Annual Best of the West All Big Island Art Show slated
Kona Oceanfront Gallery, formerly Wyland Kona Gallery, will host its largest art exhibit of the year starting June 26.
The sixth annual Best of the West All Big Island Art Show gets underway June 26 with public voting, which continues through June 27.
On June 27, from 6 to 9:30 p.m., 35 talented Big Island artists will gather at the Kailua Village-area gallery to showcase their latest creations, sign autographs, talk story and pose for photographs.
Votes will be tallied June 27 and winners will be announced around 8:30 p.m. Everyone who votes will also be entered into a raffle to can win artwork valued at $2,500.

University of the Nations to show student films
University of the Nations film students will show 14 short films that the students wrote and directed during the school year on June 26.
During the 6 p.m. event at the UN campus, located in Kailua-Kona off Kuakini Highway, there will also be food, music and fun activities. This is a formal event, so attendees are asked to come in their best Hollywood attire. Tickets start at $1; donations accepted. Tickets can be purchased at the door on the night of the event.
Satin Dolls coming to Blue Dragon
Satin Dolls and the Casablanca Jazz Quartet will present a performance at the Blue Dragon Restaurant in Kawaihae on June 28.
The performance runs 6 to 9 p.m.; cabaret runs from 7 to 9 p.m. With Binti Bailey as the featured vocalist, the show includes music by Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, Sippie Wallace, Woody Herman, and others. The Satin Dolls are dancers Binti Bailey, Pennie Sullivan and Karen Ippoliti. The Casablanca musicians are Sue Garrod on trombone, Steve Reynolds on guitar and vocals, Scott Jeffrey on bass, and Eric Jaeger on drums.
Attendees should come in cabaret inspired attire such as “Flappers,” “The Roaring ’20s,” “The Cotton Club” and “Classy and Snazzy.” There is a $10 per person cover charge for the show.

Hot Tuna to play Hilo
Original members of “Jefferson Airplane” Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady formed “Hot Tuna” as a side project in 1969. Their passion for traditional American music with a focus of delta blues still is going strong 46 years later, filling theaters around the world. Hot Tuna takes the stage at 7 p.m. June 26 at The Palace Theater in Hilo. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Leche de Tigre to celebrate Fourth of July
Leche de Tigre, featuring special guest Rub Yanna Moon, will take the stage at Daylight Mind Coffee Co. in Kailua-Kona to celebrate the Fourth of July.
The free July 4 concert gets underway at 7 p.m. at the venue located off Alii Drive in Kailua-Kona.
Since the bands’ formation in 2009 in Kona, Leche De Tigre has released its first studio album “Lactophilia,” an abundant collection of original tunes, covers and traditional songs. They then followed a string of theater concerts in Hawaii with three successful tours to California and Las Vegas since 2012. The group celebrated the release of its latest extended play “El Viaje” earlier this year.
Alohi Polynesian Dance Academy presents ‘Huakai: A Polynesian Adventure’
Alohi Polynesian Dance Academy takes you on a journey through the realm of the Polynesian Triangle in “Huakai: A Polynesian Adventure” at 7 p.m. July 11 at Kahilu Theatre in Waimea.
Enchanting stories of history and myths of Polynesian life come alive using music, drums, chant and dance. This presentation, by the students of Alohi Polynesian Dance Academy, captures the essence of Hawaii, Tahiti and Aotearoa.

‘I AM BIG BIRD’ documentary to open in Hilo
Tribeca Film’s documentary “I AM BIG BIRD” will open July 3 at The Palace Theater in Hilo.
The documentary, released theatrically on May 6, is a nostalgic and heartwarming profile of Caroll Spinney, the 81-year-old puppeteer who has not only been behind Sesame Street’s Big Bird but also Oscar the Grouch since the show’s first season 45 years ago and is still working today as their puppeteer with no intention of retiring. The film features extraordinary footage of Spinney’s earliest collaborations with Jim Henson as it traces his journey from bullied child to childhood icon. And as the yellow feathers give way to gray hair, it is the man, not the puppet, who will steal your heart.
The film, directed and produced by Dave LaMattina and Chad Walker, runs 87 minutes and has not yet been rated.
