Big Island police arrested 17 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicants between June 8 and Sunday. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes; one was under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 464 DUI arrests compared with 563 during the same period last year, a decrease of 17.6 percent, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
South Hilo officers arrested eight drivers while Kona officers arrested five, according to police. Officers in South Kohala and Ka’u arrested two drivers in each district.
There have been 673 major accidents so far this year compared with 720 during the same period last year.
So far this year, there have been 11 traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with seven during the same period last year, an increase of 57.1 percent.
To date, four fatalities were related to drugs, or a combination of drugs and alcohol.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
