HONOLULU (AP) — A man accused of killing a woman and putting her body in a Honolulu trash bin in 2013 has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the case.
Hawaii News Now (http://bit.ly/1MXS2ib ) reports Joseph Kahawai pleaded guilty Monday morning to manslaughter in the death of Janine Meyer in Waikiki.
Police say the 48-year-old Kahawai can be seen on surveillance video in the dumpster where the woman’s body was found.
The Honolulu Medical Examiner determined that Meyer died of asphyxiation.
Kahawai was initially charged with murder, but a plea deal endorsed by the victim’s family allowed him to plead guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter if he serves the full 20 years in prison. He will not be eligible for parole, work furlough or early release.
Sentencing is scheduled for September.
