LIHUE, Kauai (AP) — Grove Farm has agreed to donate five acres of land so that Kauai County can start building a youth substance abuse treatment center.

The Garden Island reports (https://bit.ly/1QisDFp ) Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. said Wednesday that the project is a top priority for the county.

The site offered by Grove Farm is located in the rural area of Kapaia.

Several other potential sites have been selected over the years, but the project never moved beyond planning stages.

The proposal calls for construction of a 10-bed facility capable of offering acute in-patient care. The proposed facility would also offer outpatient and aftercare treatment programs.

County officials say the costs of building and operating the facility could total millions of dollars. The county has not yet committed to providing those funds.
