Senior ID cards issued

The Coordinated Services for the Elderly Program of the Elderly Activities Division issues senior ID cards for seniors 60 years old and older at the Aging and Disability Resource Center in Hilo.

Senior ID cards will also be issued from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Kmart in Kailua-Kona, from 9 to 11 a.m. June 8 at St. Jude’s Church in Hawaiian Ocean View Estates, from 9 to 11 a.m. June 9 at L. Yoshimatsu Senior Center in Waimea and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 9 at Walmart in Kailua-Kona. Cards will also be issued from 1 to 4 p.m. June 16 at Hale Hauoli Senior Center in Honokaa and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 24 at West Hawaii Civic Center in Building B.

Words and Wine scheduled Tuesday

Authors Mary J. Park, Robert Frutos and Priya Deborah Lucas will be featured during Kona Stories Book Shop’s Words and Wine event at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Keauhou Shopping Center.

Park is the winner of the 2009 Hawaii Writers Conference. Her book, “38 CHESTNUTS” explores the lasting legacy of the Korean War on its survivors through the points of views of three generations of one Korean American family.

Frutos’ book “Aloha Spirituality” is about a state of heart, a state of mind, a state of consciousness and a state of awareness that individuals and humanity as a whole can benefit from.

Lucas’ book “Aloha Qi gong” is a handbook that offers readers simple yet profound methods of gathering energy to transform their lives, heal their bodies, calm their emotions, clear their thoughts and open their hearts.

This event starts with an informal meet and greet merging into a book presentation from each author and concluding after a question-and-answer session. For more information, call Brenda or Joy at 324-0350.

Kiwanis West Hawaii meets Wednesday

Kiwanis West Hawaii meets at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Quinn’s Almost By the Sea on Palani Road. All visiting Kiwanis and prospective members are invited.

This is a new satellite organization of Kiwanis East Hawaii. Kiwanis looks to serve the community by conducting service projects that respond to identified needs, especially related to children.

Seniors gather Wednesday to play games

Kailua-Kona Seniors will gather at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hale Halawai to play board games and socialize. No formal meeting will be conducted.

LEGO program set at Kailua-Kona Public Library

Kailua-Kona Public Library will hold a LEGO program for teens in seventh through 12th grades from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday. The first 20 young adult tickets will be handed out at 9 a.m.

Projects are the property of the library and LEGO bricks will be reused during future programs. Participants may opt to have their creations on display for the month following the program.

Waimea family movie night is Friday

Waimea Athletics will show the movie “Big Hero 6” at 7 p.m. Friday at Thelma Parker Gym. All families are welcome to this free community event. Free popcorn will be offered. Proceeds from concessions will benefit Waimea Thunder Softball.

Holualoa holds Art After Dark event Friday

Holualoa Village will host its monthly First Friday Art After Dark celebration from 5:30 until 8:30 p.m. Friday.

Most of the art galleries and studios will be open late to welcome guests with new art works, music and pupu.

A new tea room will be unveiled at Dovetail Gallery along with the fine art wood creations of resident craftsman Gerald Ben. The Holualoa Ukulele Gallery will feature a kanikapila all evening on the front lanai of the old post office building.

Artist William Wingert will be creating a new oil painting at Holualoa Gallery across from Paul’s Place. David Lawrence will return to the Koa Realty lanai with his classic rock ‘n’ roll renditions. In the pink Kona Hotel, Pat Pearlman Designs celebrates June’s birthstone, pearl, with freshwater and Tahitian pearl necklaces, earrings and rings.

Free parking will be available at the town parking lot and Holualoa School.
