The American Association of University Women Kona Branch has awarded its 2015 scholarships to young women at three West Hawaii high schools this year. Each student will receive a $2,000 scholarship to assist with her future educational goals.
After graduating from Konawaena High School, Chloe Delaney is planning to attend Linfield College this fall majoring in English/creative writing. She has been involved with a variety of activities during her high school career including the Japanese Club, Rotary Club, Go-Green Environmental Club and served as secretary of the National Honor Society. She played soccer and was the captain of the water polo team. In addition to her school activities, Delaney has also held a job as a hostess at a local restaurant and has volunteered at Three Ring Ranch.
Sara Johnson, a graduate of Kealakehe High School, will head to the mainland to begin her college career at the University of Pennsylvania. Johnson is planning to become a lawyer and public advocate and will major in political science and/or economics to begin that career path. Her high school and community activities were many and varied including serving as student council class treasurer, Interact treasurer and president, and president of the senior class. She has been involved in Model United Nations World Affair and Debate Club, Upward Bound, and her church youth group, while also participating on the soccer and water polo teams.
The University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana will be the destination this fall for KaMele Sanchez, a graduate of Honokaa High School, who is planning on studying agricultural and biological engineering toward a career goal as a scientific researcher. Her resume is varied and demonstrates her many interests including student government, environmental endeavors, sports, and community volunteering.
