Waimea Middle plans May Day events
One of Waimea’s oldest traditions — the celebration of May Day by Waimea Middle School students — continues Friday in the Thelma Parker Memorial Gym with two performances honoring Waimea heroes past and present. Morning and evening performances will feature WMS’ May Day Court sharing hula, oli and stories about “Malama Honua — Taking care of the Earth,” and also about their chosen Waimea heroes.
The early performance, which begins at 9:30 a.m., will include dances and songs by all middle school students. The later performance at 6 p.m. will also include presentations by students from other Waimea schools and community groups. There is no charge and everyone is invited.
Both presentations will begin with a protocol introduction of the WMS May Day eighth grade court led by King Klayton Gascon and Queen Breana Arakawa. They will be accompanied by a retinue of island princesses and escorts as well as pu blowers and kahili bearers to include Juliana Andrade, Maliealakai Culp, Keilyn Dacquel-Hulama, Deja Familiar-Lukzen, Penny Gebhardt, Lilly Lindsey, Tehani Lindsey, Lehuanani Peters, Kehaulani Rapozo, Kassie Tarpley, Nadia Yoshizumi, Dutchie Ahana, Kelii Bergin, Kystyn Cootey, Keison Falk, Spencer Hess, Makaio Liftee, Cody Loo, Chance Page, Trevor Tavares and Haven Vento-Perez.

Bertelmann earns journalism degree
Cara Kaimiola Bertelmann of Waimea was among more than 2,900 graduates who received degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in ceremonies May 8 and 9.
Bertelmann earned a bachelor of journalism from the College of Journalism and Mass Communications.
Bopp a contender for Tobin award
Christian Bopp, a wildlife biology and management/environmental and natural resource major with a Spanish minor, from Waikoloa, was among seven finalists for the 2015 Tobin Memorial Award as the University of Wyoming’s outstanding graduating man.
Cheyenne’s Joshua Messer was the recipient for this year’s Tobin Memorial Award. Callie Berman, of Boulder, Colo., received the Rosemarie Martha Spitaleri Award as UW’s outstanding graduating woman.
The annual Tobin award is based on academic excellence and achievement, service to the university, participation and leadership in the community and campus activities, and citizenship qualities.
To be considered for the Spitaleri and Tobin awards, students were judged on academic excellence and achievement; contributions and service to UW; participation and leadership in co-curricular activities; and demonstrated character and citizenship.
Parris receiving bachelor’s degree
Mitchell Parris of Waimea is graduating from Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash.
Parris is a 2011 graduate of Hawaii Preparatory Academy and will receive a bachelor of arts degree in economics during the Whitman commencement ceremony on Sunday.
Residents are on SPU dean’s list
Kailua-Kona residents Kristina Nicole Hamilton, Shannon Alysha Hamilton and Hwanhee Kim made the Seattle Pacific University winter quarter dean’s list.
Students on the dean’s list have completed at least 12 credits and attained a 3.50 or higher grade point average.
Volcano resident receives award
Rebekah Friel of Volcano received the Outstanding Fashion Merchandising Student Award from the University of Tennessee at Martin College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences in Martin, Tenn.
Byars, Minor earn degrees
Captain Cook residents, Lindsey Byars and Ajia Minor were among about 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students who received degrees from the University of Northern Colorado at Greeley during spring graduation ceremonies May 8 and 9.
Byars earned a bachelor of arts degree in Asian studies and Minor a bachelor of science degree in sport and exercise science.
