The Kona Coffee and Tea Co., founded by owners Jan and Dan Bolton in 1997, is a family-owned and operated coffee company that prides itself on the farm to cup experience. With two farms — Waiono and Malia Ohana — producing coffee, their own mill and roaster, they are “coffee artisans” as they have complete control over their products. From planting seedlings to brewing beans, they oversee the entire process.
Recently, Kona Coffee and Tea formed an alliance with the Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation Initiative to plant keiki coffee trees on a historic site which was once a majestic koa forest and the personal property of King Kamehameha I. It is the intent of the initiative to return this tropical forest to its former glory. The company hopes to perpetuate the growth of coffee with the addition of these coffee trees to this new way of sustainable reforestation.
On Friday, Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation Initiative along with The Kona Coffee and Tea Co. planted 500 keiki coffee trees on a plot of land on the slope of Mauna Kea. Miss Kona Coffee Ariel Enriquez was among those who assisted with the planting.
