The brush fire in the Green Sands Subdivision of Ka’u that consumed one structure and 15 acres earlier this week has been contained, according to the Hawaii County Fire Department.
Firefighters remained on the scene dousing hotspots and flareups within the 15-acre burn area on both sides of Kaalualu Road, between Mark Twain and Pele streets on Friday, according to Hawaii County Fire Department officials. A crew was slated to remain overnight at the scene of the fire.
One structure, an “unpermitted home,” was destroyed by the fire, which broke out around 10:30 a.m. on Monday and prompted evacuations. Several tents and abandoned vehicles may have also been consumed by the blaze. No injuries were reported.
Officials determined the fire originated from a nearby residence where rubbish was being burned in a 55-gallon drum, and the fire apparently got away from the resident.
All highways and major roadways remained open Friday.
Hawaii County Civil Defense also reported Thursday that all residential water lines were repaired, and water tanker service at Green Sands Park had been suspended. The Waiohinu water spigot remained open for water needs.
