Free classes offered for smart phone users

Verizon wireless is offering free classes to help smart phone users make the most of the features on their device. Classes are held at 75-5595 Palani Road and are free. Interested individuals must register at vzwworkshops.verizonwireless.com/vzwworkshops.

Android: Getting Started covers the basics of an Android device, including hardware functions, how to set up email, add social network accounts, master device features and customize the device. This class is offered from 8 to 9 a.m. Saturday, 9 to 10 a.m. Sunday and 8 to 9 a.m. May 30.

During Apple iPhone: Getting Started, attendees will learn about the features of an iPhone including maps, Siri, FaceTime, and the app store. This class is offered from 8 to 9 a.m. May 23 and 9 to 10 a.m. May 24.

Dances of universal peace planned

Dances of universal peace will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at New Thought Center in Kealakekua.

Participants will move in the moment while singing sacred phrases, mantras and poetry of many spiritual traditions.

Author presentations discuss caring for those with Alzheimer’s

Author and educator Frances H. Kakugawa will conduct a series of book signings and presentations speaking on how to revise our view of Alzheimer’s caregiving as a burden and instead see it as a gift.

Her message is that bringing dignity to the caregiving process makes the experience less stressful and more rewarding for both patient and caregiver.

She will speak from 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Aging and Disability Resource Center, 1055 Kinoole St., Suite 101, in Hilo. Space is limited. To reserve a seat, call Chris Ridley of the Alzheimer’s Association at 443-7360. She will also speak from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. May 30 at Basically Books, 160 Kamehameha Ave. in Hilo.

Events are free and open to the public. Books will be available at each event and can be purchased at book stores or at bookshawaii.net.

Lowen, Green plan talk-story session

Rep. Nicole Lowen and Sen. Josh Green will talk story about the this past legislative session at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the ballroom at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.

They will share stories and their viewpoints on the bills that were signed into law and those that did not pass. Attendees may ask questions about issues affecting them and their communities.

AfterHours networking event planned

The Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce invites the public to its monthly networking event, AfterHours, which will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at ChoiceMart in Captain Cook.

Attendees link with other businesses while learning about the local business community. Pupu and refreshments will be served and attendees can expect a farmers-market style, outdoor gathering featuring booths of local vendors for food sampling. Cost is $15 for chamber members and first-time nonmembers, $30 for repeat nonmembers.

Parents and families of the graduating class of 2015 are invited to senior awards night Wednesday in the Kealakehe High School cafeteria.

Kiwanis meets Wednesday

Kiwanis West Hawaii meets at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Quinn’s Almost By the Sea on Palani Road. All visiting Kiwanis and prospective members are invited.

This is a new satellite organization of Kiwanis East Hawaii. Kiwanis looks to serve the community by conducting service projects that respond to identified needs, especially related to children.
