Auditions for six volunteer actors for the Aloha Performing Art Company’s summer production of Christopher Durang’s new contemporary comedy, “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” will be held May 31 and June 1.

The open auditions are being held by APAC Artistic Director Jerry Tracy at 6 p.m. both days at Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu. Attendance at both sessions is allowed, but not required. A callback audition may be held, if necessary, at 6 p.m. June 2.

“Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” won the 2013 Tony Award for best play of the year. The Broadway production featured Sigourney Weaver and David Hyde Pierce. APAC is the second company in Hawaii to be granted the performance rights.

Those auditioning are asked to prepare a humorous monologue between no more than 2 minutes in length. Auditions will also consist of reading from the script, which is available for on-site perusal or checkout in exchange for a deposit, by arrangement with APAC Operations Director Melissa Geiger at 322-9924. Prospective cast members should be prepared to stay approximately two hours.

All roles are available: Vanya is in his 50s or early 60s. He lives with his spinster sister in Bucks County, Penn., and is resigned to his life, more or less. Sonia is Vanya’s adopted sister, in her 50s. She is discontent, volatile, and regretful, and does a mean Maggie Smith imitation. Masha, the glamorous and successful sister of Vanya and Sonia, is a nearly over the hill actress in her 50s, who gallivants around the world, making movies and supports her siblings. She has come home for a visit and to break some unpopular news. Spike is Masha’s latest boy toy, along for the ride. He is an aspiring actor in his 20s or 30s, sexy, self absorbed, physically fit and not afraid to show off his body. He strips down to his underwear as part of the action of the first act. Nina is a lovely, sincere, energetic, intelligent would-be actress in her early twenties. She is visiting her aunt next door and is star struck by Masha and Spike. Cassandra is the cleaning lady and a soothsayer. She can be any age, any ethnicity. She delivers strange omens and dire warnings mixed with misquotes from the classics and has a way with voodoo dolls.

Rehearsals, which will generally be held Sunday afternoons and Monday through Thursday evenings, will begin June 7. Many crew positions are also available. For more information or to arrange a script perusal, call Geiger.

The play will run July 17 through Aug. 2 with Friday and Saturday performances at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m.
