VAC to host artists

Volcano Art Center will host a photographer, book-binder and fabric designer and quilter this week.

Photographer Joseph Ruesing will be at the center’s gallery, located within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday to discuss the inspiration and technique used to create his digital works.

Charlene Asato will demonstrate the art of book-binding using ohe kapala (bamboo stamps) designs, leaf prints or rubber stamps to personalize books from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the gallery.

Textile artist Glorianne Garza will host a trunk show of her intricate fabric designs and discuss quilting techniques from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 21.

All events are free, however, National Park entry fees may apply.

Leche De Tigre plans EP release party

Leche De Tigre will celebrate the release of its extended play “El Viaje” from 7 to 10 p.m. on May 22 at Daylight Mind Coffee Co. and Cafe in Kailua-Kona. Dance waterfront with special guest Kaahele to open the show, then enjoy the band’s newest blend of percussive Spanish-, Gypsy- and rock-inspired vocal and guitar arrangements, backed by a driving percussive funk foundation.

Proceeds from the Daylight Mind Coffee Co. show will support the band’s attendence at Guitarfish Music Festival in Lake Tahoe, California, a community event designed to raise awareness of over fishing and pollution of the ocean, with a focus on preservation and positive change.

Since the bands’ formation in 2009 in Kona, Leche De Tigre has released its first studio album “Lactophilia,” an abundant collection of original tunes, covers and traditional songs. They then followed a string of theater concerts in Hawaii with three successful tours to California and Las Vegas since 2012.

The current band, with both original and new members, consists of Dan Brauer on nylon string and acoustic steel string guitar, Cuban Tres and vocals; Lee Motter on vocals; Chris Wilson on drums; Robby Malovic on bass; Luis Feliu on percussion; and Michaeloha Elam on trumpet.

Tickets are $15 and are available at Kona Wine Market, Daylight Mind Coffee Co., Kiernan Music and online at ldtband.com. Tickets will also be sold at the door.
