The U.S. Coast Guard and the Honolulu Fire Department are searching for an overdue stand-up paddle boarder near Kuhio Beach on Oahu.
Niel Bode, 32, of Seattle, apparently did not return after renting a stand-up paddle board near the Waikiki Wall on Oahu, the Coast Guard said. Watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector Honolulu Command Center received notification from the fire department about 7:30 p.m. that Bode was missing.
The paddle board company contacted HFD after Bode didn’t return by closing time at 5:15 p.m. He left behind his wallet, keys and cell phone.
Bode is described as Caucasian, 5 feet 8 inches tall, and weighing 180 pounds. He was last seen wearing boardshorts. The paddle board is reported to be aqua green in color with a black mat. He also had a red paddle.
An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point launched to search the area along with a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium boat crew from Coast Guard Station Honolulu, the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Galveston Island and a helicopter and boat crew from the fire department. The fire department has also queried surfers and visitors on the beach.
