HONOLULU — The state Board of Education is approving the appointment of Stephen Schatz to be the Department of Education’s new deputy superintendent.
Schatz succeeds Ronn Nozoe, who moved to Washington to work for the U.S. Department of Education.
Schatz most recently served as the department’s assistant superintendent for strategic reform. In that job, he led the state’s effortsto carry out reforms under a $75 million federal “Race to the Top” grant.
Schatz previously was a complex area superintendent, a principal and vice principal at Oahu public schools. He served as a teacher and administrator at public schools in Compton, California before that.
Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi says he brings his educational experience and his perspective as a parent of two public school children to the position.
