Record-keeping workshop planned for farmers
A free record-keeping workshop designed for Hawaii Island farmers will be held at 5 p.m. May 12 at the Kohala Village Hub in Hawi.
Stuart T. Nakamoto, extension economist at the University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, will lead the workshop and cover topics such as getting started with record keeping, organizing farm receipts, papers and notes and using a record-keeping workbook to create or modify existing systems.
The workshop is free but pre-registration is required by Friday at farm-record-keeping.eventbrite.com. Participants who pre-register will receive a free binder of record-keeping forms they may use in their own record-keeping systems.
The workshop will be held in the dining room at Kohala Village Hub (formely Kohala Village Inn/Luke’s Place) at 55-514 Hawi Road in Hawi.

Tiki Shark artist raises funds for Food Basket through book sales
Local artist Brad “Tiki Shark” Parker, award winning author S.P. Grogan and surf company Body Glove International hosted a book signing event last March. The illustrated novel titled, “Atomic Dreams at The Red Tiki Lounge” is a fast-paced historical fantasy adventure set in post World War II Hawaii.
Part of sales proceeds generated from the event were donated to The Food Basket, Hawaii Island’s Food Bank.
The recent presentation at the Kona Oceanfront Gallery was also attended by Kristin Kahaloa, the new executive director of the Kona Kohala Chamber of Commerce and Mark Hanna the owner of Kona Oceanfront Gallery.
Parker also designs beach towels and accessories for Body Glove International that sells its products in over 55 countries worldwide.
Sheriff recruits sought by state
The Department of Public Safety (PSD) is looking for a few good men and women to join the state Sheriff Division.
Recruitment will open on the Department of Human Resources and Development (DHRD) website for a three-week period from Monday until May 24. PSD is seeking applicants willing to serve on every island.
To qualify, the applicant must be a high school graduate; be able to demonstrate knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation; have the ability to read and comprehend complex written material; write a clear, factual report; and have at least two years of work experience which demonstrates these abilities.
After the initial recruitment, chosen applicants will be tested on physical fitness (pushups, sit-ups and a 1.5-mile run) and have to complete a written test to gauge their reading, writing and comprehension skills. They will also take a pre-employment law enforcement assessment. After successful completion of the physical ability test, written test and the pre-employment assessment, the applicant may be scheduled for an interview with the department.
Individuals who pass the testing and are selected from the recruitment will participate in a five-month Sheriff Recruit Class, which will consist of classroom and on-the-job training in the laws, rules, regulations, principles, practices, procedures and techniques of law enforcement; the operation of firearms and other equipment; as well as physical conditioning.

YCC applications being accepted at park
Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park is accepting applications for its summer Youth Conservation Corps program. YCC provides gainful employment and an educational experience in the conservation of our natural and historical heritage. YCC workers will participate in conservation and preservation related projects park-wide and work with all park divisions.
This year’s program will run from June 8 to July 17. Applicants for YCC crew member positions must be between the ages of 15 and 18. During the term of employment from June 8 to July 17, members must be at least 15 years of age and not reached the age of 19. Enrollees in the program work 40 hours per week and earn $7.75 per hour. Applications must be submitted by May 20 and may be obtained at the park.

Coffee tree suckering class offered
Kona Coffee Farmers Association will offer a coffee tree suckering class at 9 a.m. Saturday at Lehuula Farm, 79-7350 Mamalahoa Highway in Kainaliu behind Lanakila Church.
The class is free for members or $10 for nonmembers, which is refundable with membership.

Book sale to benefit Kona libraries
Friends of the Libraries, Kona will hold its next book sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday on the lanai of the Kailua-Kona Public Library.
Proceeds help support the needs of the Kona libraries. There will not be another sale until Aug. 15.
Books may be donated Tuesday and Thursday mornings when volunteers are working in the garage area at the library. To volunteer, call 322-0077.
Free electricity workshop geared toward businesses
A free Hawaii Electric Light Business Solutions workshop will be held from 8:30 to 10 a.m. May 20 at Kuakini Tower, Suite 216, 75-5722 Kuakini Highway.
The workshop will cover energy efficient technologies, electric rates and billing.

Big Island Press Club holds scholarship dinner
Big Island Press Club’s annual scholarship dinner will be held at 5:30 p.m. May 28 at Hilo’s Seaside Restaurant.
The press club annually awards scholarships at the dinner to students pursuing a higher education in journalism, a related field or are engaged in journalism at the collegiate level.
Guest speaker will be comedian Augusto Tulba, aka Augie T. The event is expected to sell out. Advance dinner reservations are $35 or $40 at the door. Ticket fees may apply. No-host cocktails will be served. SKEA plans lei making event
Society for Kona’s Education and Art will hold a lei making event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at its Honaunau facility on Mamalahoa Highway between mile markers 105 and 106.
Participants should bring a lei needle if they have one. Flowers are welcome.
