Laaloa Beach Park was closed around lunchtime Saturday after a 10-foot tiger shark was spotted off the beach. The beach opened two hours later after a Hawaii County helicopter responded to track the animal but did not sight it.
A lifeguard confirmed the sighting and ocean safety officers evacuated the beach, also known as Magic Sands, firefighters said.
Lance Owens was at the beach when the tiger was sighted.
“One of my kids, Dean, saw the shark heading south,” Owens said.
A warning sign remained posted around 3:30 p.m. at the beach, but swimmers were enjoying the surf.
