The earthquake was recorded at 10:06 p.m. Hawaii time in the New Britain Region of Papua New Guinea, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
Based on all available data, a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami was not generated, according to the center.
It was the second earthquake registered by the center on Thursday. A magnitude-6.8 earthquake was recorded at 12:45 a.m. Hawaii time in the New Britain Region of Papua New Guinea. The temblor also did not trigger a tsunami.
