Gusts topping 50 mph could impact Big Island areas through Wednesday evening, according to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, which has issued a wind advisory.
The service forecast northeast winds around 25 mph to 35 mph with gusts topping 50 mph. The advisory, which covers northern, eastern and interior areas of the island, including Kohala, remains in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Forecasters said the strong winds will be focused over and around mountainous terrain, particularly in the Waimea, Kawaihae and Saddle Road areas.
A wind advisory is issued when sustained winds of at least 30 mph or gusts of at least 50 mph are expected. The service cautioned that winds this strong can make driving in the area difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.
