In West Hawaii, with the exception of the Waikoloa resort area, motorists were paying $3.43. That’s uncharged from last week. Including the Waikoloa resort area, where prices are normally higher, West Hawaii motorists this week doled out on average $3.48, also unchanged from the week before.
In Waimea, drivers spent $3.51 per gallon while drivers in Waikoloa Village spent $3.52. Fueling a vehicle in the Waikoloa resort area cost motorists on average $3.69 per gallon this week. All gas prices in South Kohala have gone unchanged since early March.

AAA’s Daily Fuel Gauge Report put the average price of gas in Hilo at $3.06 per gallon during the week, down from last week. AAA does not track gas prices for other Big Island areas. Hilo’s record high gas price was recorded in April 2012 at $4.76.

In Honolulu, a gallon of gas this week averaged $2.94, according to AAA. Drivers in the Wailuku area of Maui paid $3.23.
Nationwide, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline this week jumped to $2.48, up from $2.40. AAA attributed the national price increase to sharply rising crude oil costs.
“Domestic crude oil prices last week reached the highest levels of 2015 as supplies built more slowly than anticipated,” AAA said in a media release. “Despite the increase, consumers continue to benefit from substantially lower gas prices compared to recent years, with today’s national average of $2.46 per gallon representing the least expensive average for this date since 2009 ($2.06).”
California for the eighth consecutive week paid the most for gas at $3.19 per gallon. South Carolina drivers paid the least at $2.23 per gallon.
AAA said Hawaii, “consistently one of the nation’s most expensive markets,” was the only state in the nation to not see fuel prices increase.
