The U.S. Coast Guard rescued one man Friday and is searching for another after the 34-foot fishing vessel “Munchkin” ran aground west of Lanai.

The vessel, with two aboard, ran aground on rocks about 1.5 miles west of Lanai at 12:12 a.m. Friday, the Coast Guard said, noting it received a mayday call from the fishing vessel over Channel 16. An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point located and located one survivor in the water about 3:20 a.m. The survivor was taken to Memorial Hospital on Maui.

The Coast Guard Cutter Kiska, a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium response from Station Maui and the MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew continue to search for the second man who is still missing.
