Kona Choral Society celebrates 25 years with its “25 on the 25th” program at 5 p.m. Saturday at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel featuring entertainment, music and a photo history.
The fee is $55 per person for dinner. A no host cash only bar is available.

Ka‘u Coffee Festival coming up
The Ka‘u Coffee Festival offers activities for all ages Friday through May 3.
A paina and open house at historic Pahala Plantation House will feature music, hula, food and house tours from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday. On April 29 and 30, participants may explore flume systems of the sugarcane era and development of hydroelectric power on a Ka‘u Mountain Water System during a hike in the Wood Valley rainforest from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The hike is limited to 30 people. Fundraiser to replace items stolen from veterans cemetery
Rep. Cindy Evans will hold a fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at Kona Elks Lodge 2616. Funds raised will replace items stolen from West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery, including tents, poles and awnings, which will be needed for Memorial Day ceremonies.
The event includes a simple meal of hot dogs and chili for $50 per plate. Attendees will meet representatives, other state leaders and military personnel.

Guided hikes offered at Kahuku
The Kahuku section of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is open to the public every Saturday and Sunday and will host several free upcoming events.
A guided hike of Palm Trail is offered from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. May 3 and June 14.
Guests will learn about Hawaiian goddesses Hiiaka and Pele on an easy 1.7-mile walk along the main road in Kahuku. The program is offered from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday and June 21.
Puu o Lokuana is a short, moderately difficult 0.4-mile hike to the top of the grassy cinder cone. A guided hike is offered from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. May 2 and June 20.
People and Land of Kahuku is a moderate 2-mile, three-hour guided hike that loops through varied landscapes to explore the human history of Kahuku. The hike is offered from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. May 9 and June 7.
A guided, easy-to-moderate hike will explore the rich geologic history of Kahuku from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. May 17 and June 28.
An easy, 1-mile (or less) walk will showcase the role of ohia lehua in native Hawaiian forests from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. May 31 and June 27.
Hike participants should enter the Kahuku unit of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the mauka side of Highway 11 near mile marker 70.5 and meet near the parking area. Sturdy footwear, water, raingear, sun protection and a snack are recommended.
Pa‘u workshop slated Saturday
A workshop about pa‘u equestrian traditions and practices will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Kona Historical Society.
In preparation for the King Kamehameha Day Celebration Parade on June 13, the workshop will highlight the essentials of pa‘u riding, including lei making, history and tradition, parade protocol and the wrapping of the fabric. A type of culotte or skirt, the pa‘u is fashioned from a single piece of fabric wrapped around the rider to cover the legs and stirrups. It is held in place at the waist by kukui nuts twisted inside the fabric.
The free workshop will be led by kumu of the pa‘u tradition. The public is invited to attend.

Free coaching workshops offered
The county Recreation Division and Positive Coaching Alliance are offering a Triple Impact Competitor workshop from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday. The class will help participants improve performance by focusing on effort and learning rather than on results. It will cover how to hone a mental game under pressure and build a winning team chemistry. The class is free to the first 50 participants.
Also, a Double-Goal Coaching II class is planned from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. June 16 at Kamehameha Park in North Kohala. The class is open to adults and a $5 fee includes a Double-Goal Coaching booklet. Attendees will learn how to improve their athlete’s performance by focusing on effort rather than results, how to deal with common coaching problems and how to coach a child through a losing season.
