A new urgent care facility recently opened in Kona.
Aloha Kona Urgent Care opened last month at the Pottery Terrace commercial center on Kuakini Highway in Suite 213.
The nonprofit clinic is open from 3 to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
The walk-in clinic provides care for non-life threatening illnesses and injuries during hours that local doctors’ offices are closed.
Dr. Robert Doe, a doctor from Pennsylvania who has been coming to the island for the past few years with the University of the Nations that works with the clinic, said the facility was built to serve not compete.
“That’s why we chose not to be open in the mornings and instead in the afternoons. We didn’t want to compete with the locals,” he said. “We wanted to provide resources for when it’s harder to find them.”
According to a release, the clinic’s mission is to complement and enhance the community’s existing medical providers while addressing the shortage of physicians and medical care on the Big Island.
Aloha Kona Urgent Care is a 2,000-square-foot facility with a reception and waiting area, nurses’ station, four examination rooms, a procedure room, secure drug and dispensary and laboratory equipment.
The clinic staff is trained to tackle a variety of non-life threatening issues, ranging from common ailments such as burns, infections and colds and flus to broken bones and lacerations. Plans are in the works for an X-ray facility, as well.
The clinic accepts most forms of medical insurance, such as Quest, Hawaii Medical Service Association, Hawaii Medical Assurance Association, University Health Alliance and Aloha Care, with other insurance carriers being added. The facility is in the process of adding Ohana Care, HMA, Medicare, United Health Care and Kaiser Permanente.
Plans are also underway to host an ongoing series of community events and health education seminars, programs for socials services, mental health services and addiction support. Additional proposed programs include having clinic physicians work with area schools to promote awareness and interest in health care careers.
Aloha Kona Urgent Care is a subsidiary of Transformation Health Network, an Ohio-based nonprofit established in 2014 by a group of Christian professionals to provide medical and health care to under-served populations in the United States and abroad.
