Kohala reunion organizers collecting memories, photos
Anyone who attended Kohala High and Elementary School between 1966 and 1982 will be familiar with its popular band program, led by the late Billie D. Brooks.
In conjunction with this year’s Kohala Community Reunion, former band members are planning a band program reunion from noon to 4 p.m. July 4 at the Hawi Jodo Mission Hall. They are collecting memories and photos of the band for a memory book. Those with items to share should do so by April 30.
The reunion is meant to include band members, majorettes, chaperones, managers, those who performed in the schools plays and all Brooks fans. The reunion will include a potluck, and time to talk story and reminisce over old photos and news clippings.
The originator of the reunion plan was the late Cheryl (Matsuda) Torrison. In her memory, fellow band members are continuing with the plan for a Kohala High School music program reunion and invites anyone who was ever involved in the Kohala High School music program to participate.
Anyone interested in attending the reunion or who has photos or memories to share is asked to send the materials and photos and contact information (email and/or phone number) to any one of the following: Sharon Sakai, ssakai002@hawaii.rr.com; Rae Hanashiro, ryhanashiro@gmail.com; Judy (Follosco) Joyner, jfjoyner@ec.rr.com; or Buni (Brooks) Nakamura, bbrooks2200@yahoo.com.

HPA scholarship auction is Saturday
Hawaii Preparatory Academy’s 21st Biennial Scholarship Auction will be held on Saturday in the Hapuna Ballroom at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel.
Hosted cocktails and auction preview begin at 5 p.m. with dinner at 6:15 p.m. The main event opens at 7:15 p.m. with Wendy McClain of McClainʻs Auctions presiding.
The HPA auctions were born in 1974 when Anna Lindsey Perry-Fiske, a member of the HPA Board of Directors and owner of Anna Ranch in Waimea, and Bernard Nogues, HPA director of admission and financial aid, joined forces to help create a viable scholarship aid program at HPA.
The last two auctions in 2011 and 2013 raised a total of more than $1 million to benefit the school’s financial aid program. The school owns all auction items and 100 percent of the proceeds go directly to HPA students.
Items up for auction include paintings by island artists and services. All auction items are available online for preview at isaacsartcenter.hpa.edu.
Sponsorship tables of 10 are available and individual tickets are $175 per person. To support the auction, or to reserve tickets, contact Janet Melton at 881-4044, visit go.hpa.edu/auction or email advancement@hpa.edu.
