The earthquake, which had a registered depth of 8.5 miles, was recorded at 3:57 p.m. Thursday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. It was centered 51 miles west-southwest of Kailua-Kona and 52 miles west of Honaunau.
At 12:49 a.m. Thursday, a magnitude-3.8 earthquake was recorded in the same area.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue an advisory following the temblor.
