A Hilo woman faces multiple charges following a non-fatal, officer-involved shooting Saturday.
Hawaii County police have charged Cherish Torres, 25 with unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, first-degree criminal property damage and five traffic offenses. Her bail is set at $36,075, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
Torres was taken into custody late Saturday afternoon after an officer fired a shot at the stolen black Honda Civic she was driving.
Police said a Hilo patrol officer attempted to stop the vehicle around 4 p.m. Saturday for a traffic violation at the intersection of Lanikaula and Nowelo streets in Hilo. The driver then fled and a short-time later the car struck a vehicle at the intersection of Komohana Street and Ainaola Drive, then collided with a police officer’s vehicle before fleeing down Haihai Street in Hilo.
At the intersection of Kilauea Avenue, the Honda reportedly drove toward an officer on foot and in response, the officer fired a shot at the car. The Honda then struck a police vehicle in pursuit, causing both vehicles to end up in a gulch.
Police said Torres was the only occupant of the vehicle. The car was reported stolen in Hilo on April 6.
Torres was previously sentenced to four years probation for burglary in April 2014.
She remains in the Hilo police cellblock pending her initial court appearance scheduled for Tuesday.
