Events at VFW Post announced

Kona Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12122, located behind the locksmith store off Kaiwi Street, has announced the following events:

Free veterans coffee at 9:30 a.m. today. Veterans are invited to meet for camaraderie with others who have served honorably.

A spaghetti, salad and bread dinner will be served beginning at 4 p.m. Friday. The cost is $5.

Korean War veterans meet at 10 a.m. Saturday.

VFW meeting and election of officers begins at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Lee Stewart plays a varied venue on keyboard for listening and dancing from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

The post is closed Monday.

West Hawaii County Band performs free concert Friday

West Hawaii County Band will play a free spring concert from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Hale Halawai. The band will play music that brings back fond memories of the past.

Conductor Lisa Archuletta, who received her music degree from the University of Hawaii and her master’s degree from Yale University School of Music, will conduct the concert.

Suicide prevention conference planned

The 15th annual Prevent Suicide Hawaii Healing Conference “E Malama Ola (Caring for Life)” will be held April 30 at Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort and Spa.

The public is invited to join colleagues, friends and neighbors in a day of suicide education, awareness, prevention, intervention and supportive care. Jerry Reed, director of the Suicide Prevention Resource Center, will be the keynote speaker. Reed speaks nationally and internationally on the topic of suicide prevention and serves on the board of the International Association for Suicide Prevention.

Neighborhood Place hosts family day

In observance of April as Child Abuse Prevention month, Neighborhood Place of Kona is hosting its third annual Celebrating Ohana event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at West Hawaii Civic Center.

Community partner programs and agencies will provide resources and activities for keiki. Performances by Kona youth and elders, a light lunch and door prizes are planned. The event is free.

Hospital Auxiliary meets on Monday

The Kona Community Hospital Auxiliary will hold its monthly board meeting at 1 p.m. Monday in the hospital conference room. Visitors are welcome. The organization also invites the public to its bake sale held from 7 to 9 a.m. every Friday in the hospital cafeteria.

Waimea Outdoor Circle holds plant sale

Waimea Outdoor Circle’s spring plant sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Waimea Nature Park behind Canada France Hawaii Telescope.

Native plants and trees, fruit trees, herbs and vegetable starts, orchids and ornamentals will be sold. Crafts, baked goods, artwork and ono food will also be available.

Mauna Kea Quilters meet Saturday

Mauna Kea Quilters will gather from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday in the meeting room of the Thelma Parker Memorial Library in Waimea. The gathering begins with a business meeting. Show and tell and sharing of ideas and techniques follows.

The group of patchwork quilters donates quilts to raise money for worthwhile organizations. The group has also provided quilts to the police and fire departments and North Hawaii Community Hospital for those in need and made stockings for needy children.

Living with Blindness presentation is Friday

The National Federation of the Blind, West Hawaii Chapter continues its series of presentations on Living with Blindness at 11 a.m. Friday at Hale Halawai. Angelia Beshears of Aloha Independent Living will discuss available services for the blind and those with low vision.

The free meetings are held at 11 a.m. on the second Friday of each month and are open to the public.
