HONOLULU — Maui authorities say an 18-year-old Kahului man was rescued over the weekend after being swept into the ocean by a wave.
Honolulu news station Hawaii News Now say Paia firefighters responded to the scene Saturday afternoon near the “Puka Maui” trail where the man had been hiking with friends.
Authorities say a wave swept the man into the water as the group was taking in the ocean scenery.
The man was pulled out to sea. Authorities say the man swam over to the next bay, where his friends were unable to rescue him because of steep terrain.
Rescuers airlifted the man to a landing zone that was set up on Hana Highway.
According to authorities, the man sustained minor scrapes and bumps and declined emergency medical services.
