HONOLULU — The Hawaii Judiciary is looking for attorneys who can serve as per diem judges.
Per diem judges are part-time judges appointed by the chief justice on an as-needed basis. Per diem judges preside in District Court or Family Court.
Applications must be submitted by May 12.
The state constitution says applicants must be Hawaii and U.S. citizens licensed to practice law by the Hawaii Supreme Court for at least five years before being nominated. Federal, state and county government employees are disqualified from serving as per diem judges.
Once appointed, per diem judges are prohibited from holding other public positions for profit, such as teaching at the law school. However, a per diem judge may still engage in private law practice.
