Thirteen people — including a boater — were arrested by Big Island police for alleged driving/boating under the influence of an intoxicant between March 16 and Sunday. Two were involved in traffic crashes and one was younger than age 21.

Thirteen people — including a boater — were arrested by Big Island police for alleged driving/boating under the influence of an intoxicant between March 16 and Sunday. Two were involved in traffic crashes and one was younger than age 21.

Puna and South Hilo officers arrested four people in each district while Kona officers arrested three, according to the Hawaii Police Department. North Hilo and South Kohala officers also nabbed one driver in each district.

So far this year, there have been 213 DUI arrests compared with 310 during the same period last year. There have been 316 major accidents so far this year compared with 391 during the same period last year.

So far this year, there have been five traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with three during the same period last year. To date, two fatalities were related to drugs, according to police.
