Kohala High School’s Class of 1985 will be celebrating its 30-year class reunion June 26 to 28. Classmates are encouraged to email their contact information (email and/or phone) to kohalahighschoolco85@gmail.com for meeting dates, updates and schedule of events.
Keauhou Canoe Club offers scholarships
Keauhou Canoe Club is offering two $1,000 scholarships for graduating seniors from all West Hawaii high schools who are members of a high school paddling team or community club-level paddling organization within the last 18 months.
The J.F. Rogers Academic Scholarship for $1,000 is open to a West Hawaii graduate with a 2.9 grade point average or higher and grade transcripts are required.
The Mike Haines Memorial Merit Scholarship for $1,000 is open to a graduating senior who has contributed to his paddling club, or community at large, through leadership, volunteerism or service.
Applicants can apply for only one scholarship with the deadline of March 31. Applications are available through counselor’s offices, paddling coaches or contact Sissie Pittullo at sissie.pittullo@hotmail.com.
Grant will support women’s education
The Kona Business and Professional Women’s Organization will award money to an eligible woman who is seeking to continue her academic education or occupational training to reach a career goal. The applicant must be at least 21 years old and submit an application stating goals and financial need. Two references are also required.
An application may be obtained by calling Mary Reynolds at 334-0077. The deadline to apply is March 31. Applicants will be called to schedule an in-person interview to finalize the requirements for the selection process.
KCFA Grant Refresher Workshop set
The coffee berry borer beetle is active and it is time to spray. The Kona Coffee Farmers Association will present its Grant Refresher Workshop from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday at the University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources in Kainaliu.
The workshop is for new participants to become eligible for 50 percent off of up to 2 gallons of b.bassiana. Growers who have attended past grant workshops continue to be eligible.
Foundation hosts lecture series
The Kona Hospital Foundation will hold its bimonthly informal lecture series from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday in the Community Meeting Hale (Building G) at the West Hawaii Civic Center. The Kona Hospital Foundation lectures are free and open to the public. The topic is “Understanding Palliative and Hospice Care.”
The foundation is hosting guest speakers, Laura Varney, Hospice of Kona CEO, and Norman Goody, M.D., Hospice of Kona medical director. They will discuss the fields of palliative and hospice care. They will explain how these two health care disciplines differ, how they are similar, and how each can offer personalized support to individuals and their families facing a life-limiting illness. There will be time for questions and answers following the presentation.
